Illustrator Ekua Holmes Wins Caldecott Honor for Children's Book on Fannie Lou Hamer

Boston illustrator Ekua Holmes was most recently awarded the Caldecott Honor Book Medal for her illustrations in the children's book, Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer: The Spirit of The Civil Rights Movement.

Voice of Freedom: Fannie Lou Hamer: The Spirit of The Civil Rights Movement was authored by Carole Weatherford and illustrated by Holmes. The book is a compilation of poems, short stories and collages to celebrate the life of civil rights activist, Fannie Lou Hamer.

You may have heard of Ekua Holmes before as she illustrated the 2015 Martin Luther King day doodle that was widely praised and spoke to Holmes' beginnings as a muralist in the Boston Roxbury area.
When asked about what Holme's is going to do with this new found notoriety, she said that she hopes to illustrate another book with Candlewick Press in the near future.
