Best selling author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie received an honorary degree from her alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, at last week’s commencement ceremony.
The award-winning Nigerian novelist completed her master’s degree in creative writing from the Baltimore, Maryland university in 2003, the same year she released her first novel Purple Hibiscus.
Adichie was one of eight distinguished industry leaders honored at the May 18 ceremony where filmmaker Spike Lee delivered the commencement address.
In a video announcing the honorees, Adichie, who also holds a second master's degree in African studies from Yale University, gave this advice to the graduating class of 2016: “... eat real food as often as you can. And embrace ignorance. Say those words “I don’t know,” because by embracing ignorance you open up the possibility of knowledge.”
