Misty Copeland to Make Broadway Debut in Cast of 'On the Town'

Misty Copeland is joining the cast of the musical "On the Town" for a 2-week run on Broadway beginning August 25. The news of her Broadway debut comes shortly after Copeland made history by becoming the first African American woman to be named Principal Dancer with the American Ballet Theater.

Copeland will play the role of a dancer named Ivy in the production.

"On the Town" ticket sales could see a boost from the addition of Copeland. The production, which was shut out of this years Tony's, played to 70 percent audience capacity during the last week of June. The principal dancer has already brought out large, enthusiastic audiences to see her dance in "The Nutcracker", "Swan Lake", and "Romeo and Juliet" in the past year, and her profile on the heels of the ABT announcement is bigger than ever.
“It’s such a beautiful time right now, I think, for dance, and especially for ballet and bringing it to a much broader audience,” Copeland said to the New York Times. “I always say that it has changed my life, and it’s such a beautiful thing to be a part of — and I think people are realizing that, a new generation is realizing that. It’s so exciting.”
