Grace Jones Reminds Us that She is the Prototype in Her New Memoir

Jamaican born singer, songwriter, supermodel, record producer, actress, and style icon, Grace Jones, has influenced a number of entertainers in her prolific career. 67-year-old Jones opens up about today's pop stars who have been influenced by her style in her new memoir, "I'll Never Write My Memoirs."

In an excerpt from her memoir Jones writes:
“Trends come along and people say, ‘Follow that trend’. There’s a lot of that around at the moment: ‘Be like Sasha Fierce. Be like Miley Cyrus. Be like Rihanna. Be like Lady Gaga. Be like Rita Ora and Sia. Be like Madonna.’ I cannot be like them … except to the extent that they are already being like me. I have been so copied by those people who have made fortunes that people assume I am that rich. But I did things for the excitement, the dare, the fact that it was new, not for the money, and too many times I was the first, not the beneficiary.”

She goes on to describe today's stars as sticking to the status quo. “They dress up as though they are challenging the status quo but by now, wearing those clothes, pulling those faces, revealing those tattoos and breasts – that is the status quo,” she says.
She also writes that she has turned down the chance to work with some of today's stars saying, “I’d rather be a memory of something fantastic than join in the party as it is now.”
